KitchenSync
Medium: Open-source Hardware and Software
Role: Creator & Lead Developer
Context: Exhibited at Proof of Work, Krull Stiftung art prize, Berlin, September 2025
KitchenSync is a plug-and-play synchronized video playback and automation system built on affordable Raspberry Pi hardware. Unlike expensive proprietary solutions like BrightSign ($300-2000+ per node), KitchenSync provides superior flexibility at under $200 per node, transforming displays into intelligent automation hubs capable of controlling external devices such as DMX lighting.
Details
- Built with Python 3.9+, VLC media player, and systemd services
- Sub-10ms synchronization accuracy using UDP broadcast protocol
- USB-based automatic configuration and media delivery
- Serial protocol support (MIDI, OSC) for hardware integration
- WebSocket integration for remote monitoring and control
- Deployed at Proof of Work by Johannes Büttner, part of the Krull Stiftung art prize in Berlin, September 2025. The exhibition validated system reliability and revealed critical insights about synchronization edge cases and user experience workflows.
